Radio Show #20 (20-05-11)

The Byrds

Hey lads, you're back on your regular Shindig! friday evening with now a brand new opening theme : "5-4-3-2-1" by Manfred Mann. This theme was also used by "Ready Steady Go" TV show back in the 60's!
From now on, there's also a backing track in your favorite radio show.
But enough talks! Dig your weekend's starter with Dewey Freed on radio campus :

Tracklist :
1. I Need Your Loving – Ronnie Jones with The Nightimers
2. You Movin' – The Byrds
3. Fool In Love – The Veltones
4. Making Time – The Creation
5. Night Time Is The Right Time – The Blues Project
6. Love Me – Elvis Presley
7. Girls On The Beach – The Beach Boys

Backing Track : Slim Jenkin's Place - Booker T. & The MG's

Before starting the video section, I recommand you to listen to the original full length, uncut version of "I Need Your Loving" by Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford (it's available on YouTube). I will try to broadcast their version soon but the version I got is the one which was released as a single (e.i. the cut one).

The Creation performing their awesome track "Making Time"
on German TV show Beat Beat Beat
"Take Your Pick, Make You Sick"
Take that violin bow and crunch your guitar!
(way before Jimmy Page)
Like the dance the hipsters are doing.

What to say, apart from He is the King!
Elvis Presley performing "Love Me" in his 68' Comeback Special.
So charismatic, so charming, so great.
Elvis has left the building!
R.I.P. Elvis "Aaron" Presley

Hip cats, here's the trailer of the only beach movie
featuring The Beach Boys : Girls On The Beach
In Swingin' Colors!
You know what! I wanna see this movie!
Featuring also Lesley Gore and The Crickets!

But wait a minute. Look at what I've just found :
The Beach Boys playing a song called "The Monkey's Uncle"
with a girl named Annette in the movie of
the same name produced by Disney
I'd like to see this movie too!

Talking 'bout movies, I've just seen "Candy" (I talked about it two weeks ago) and it's far more psychedelic that you can expect seeing the trailer. Well worth your time and effort ; and the soundtrack is provided by The Byrds and Steppenwolf, so don't hesitate (the song "I Want Candy" is actually not included in the soundtrack).
The film also starred Marlon Brandon, Ringo Starr
and Anita Pallenberg among others!
Here's a bunch of selected quotes :
"This man wet his pants, that's bad"
"Then the pig got eaten by a crocodile"
"You can't bring a frozen guru to California"
One question about the film : what the fuck is doing Spider Man in it!
But don't forget that whatever happened,
everybody wants Candy!

And to finish this glorious selection, here's the sixth part of
The Kinks' concert in Paris on April 24, 1965

Radio Show #19 (13-05-11)

 Canned Heat

Hey, what's up folks. I've been all too busy this last two weeks due to the exams et al and I hadn't time to prepare my broadcast, so I decided to feature something that doesn't need preparation and last a hell of a long time. The blatant solution was a long jam, and I opted for Canned Heat's "Woodstock Boogie" in its full length version of 28 min 32 s. No matter what you think about it, I suppose that you have to hear this kind of thing at least one time in your life. I assume it's totally unhype, slicy labouredbe and probably too long, so if you have already hear it and don't want to renew the experience, I recommend you to wait for next week show which will be all your loved Shindig! kinda music!
I think the best way to appreciate this music is to see it live. I remember seeing Dickey Betts & Great Southern live in State College, PA and it was a truly stunning moment, almost mind-boggling and the nearly half an hour songs were all the more good. Concerning Canned Heat, I prefer by far their original version of "Fried Hockey Boogie", even if their Woodstock performance is said to have been one of the highlight of the festival, which I totally understand 'cause they are really able to do great stuff live and to entertain a large crowd easily. But now, take some time to listen to it.

So here it is, the podcast from Shindig! radio show from May 13, 2011 featuring Canned Heat live at Woodstock on August 16, 1969 :

Tracklist :
1. Amphetamine Annie – Canned Heat
2. Woodstock Boogie – Canned Heat

I'm not a particular fan of hippies (and that's an understatement) and their weird clothes and habits, but I do love Canned Heat "Goin' Up The Country" (who doesn't ?) which was chose to promote the Woodstock based movie and used in its trailer. Here's the vid (ugly but funny people) :
Goin' Up The Country - Canned Heat

Here's a couple of vids of Canned Heat performing
at Woodstock Music & Art Fair
Famous part with Bob "The Bear" lighting a cigarette with an unknown

See you on next week for your regular friday evening Shindig!

2. I'm Just A Mops – The Mops
3. Everlasting Love – The Love Affair
4. Beaver Patrol – The Wilde Knights
5. Katy Toe – Johnny Cash
6. Landslide – Tony Clarke
7. A Young Man Is Gone – The Beach Boys

Well, the selection of vids on YouTube concerning today's
broadcast is pretty scarce so here's some non-related video
to entertain you
To begin, Gene Vincent singing "Temptation Baby" in a movie clip
Joe Meek was the producer on this song
Look at what Gene is looking at, quite funny

To stay with Joe Meek related artist, here's the opening
credits of "Play It Cool" starring Billy Fury
Play It Cool - Billy Fury

Now I would like to feature one of my favorite artist
Too often forget, he was a huge star in the late 50's in the UK
The King Of Skiffle, Lonnie Donegan
Lonnie Donegan performing "Jack O'Diamonds"
on Six-Five Special TV show in 1958
Be sure to check the full-length version of this episode
of this show on YouTube. Well worth your time.

And I know it's not a vid, but I can't resist to bring you his
tremendous version of Lead Belly's song "Rock Island Line"
"-What you got on board, boy?
-I got sheeps, I got cows, I got horses, I got pigs, I got all livestock!
-You're alright then boy, you don't have to pay me nothing."
He got a little bit of steam, and a little bit of speed
"-I fooled you, I fooled you, I got pig iron,
I got pig iron, I got all pig iron!"

And here's the fifth part of The Kinks concert
from April 24, 1965 in Paris

The Strangeloves

Hey lads, are you ready for a mind boggling musical experience!

The Strangeloves performing "I Want Candy"
at the Hulaballoo A-Go-Go TV Show.
Everything is here, from the zebra jackets to the tribal drums
(probably picked up at a flea market in Queens!)

Look what I've found :
? And The Mysterians performing "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby"
near Chicago, IL, in front of a crumb ... hum ... an old crowd!
It's a shame as they still got a lot of energy!

Just Like Me - Paul Revere & The Raiders
Live at Hulaballoo (c. 1965)
The Go-Go dancers are terrific!

Apparently I'm cursed by the Hulaballoo A-Go-Go!
Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels perform "Jenny Take A Ride"
Still gorgeous Go-Go dancers!

No, I'm really cursed!
Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs - Ring Dang Doo
Live at Hulaballoo in 1965
What could I say apart from "freakin' out go-go chicks!"

To finish this amazing frat party, here's an extremly weird
film from 1968 called "I Want CANDY" and featuring
The Strangeloves' song as soundtrack.
All you can expect from a very bizarre flick from that time :
Blond gal, music, moustache, strange sex, psychedelism,
flowers, shaman, pool table (!), even snow and stars!
If anyone's got a hint of the plot, let me know!

You can watch the full-length movie through You-Tube.
But don't tell it, that's a secret.
